All My Children

I'm meeting Nephew's new girlfriend tonight.

I feel sorry for her because she's being sized up by his sister, my niece's best friend, the other nephew and me. No pressure there. These are my children. Well, that's how I think of them. I'm grateful to my brother and sister for raising these amazing little people so that they are comfortable in my orbit.
These are the children I would have had, had I had children. In their own way, each of them is scarily like me. So I'm confident that the girlfriend will be treated with respect. She might even have as much fun as I do when I'm with this crew, just hanging out.

Other Nephew, Niece, Niece's Best Friend, Auntie J

I love the company of these young people, all 20-somethings, all optimistic, all opinionated and all very smart. Well, smart about some things.
Niece and Best Friend plan to move to a major city now after spending the college years in a mid-size southern city. They're looking for a two-bedroom apartment, in the major city, to share. "How much do you plan to spend on rent?" I asked recently. They both replied: "$500 or $600 each."
I take them very seriously, so I did not laugh.
Should I break the news to them about the high cost of living in the big city?
No, they're pretty smart. They'll figure it out.
